On 12 October, the owner informed the State Food and Veterinary Service that the birds had fallen ill and mass mortality had begun in one of the four poultry houses. On Sunday, around 2,000 of the 5,380 turkeys in one poultry house suddenly died. On 13 October 2025, official veterinarians visited the farm and collected samples from all the turkey houses for passive surveillance of avian influenza. These samples were sent to the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (National Reference Laboratory) for avian influenza testing. Temporary restrictions were imposed on the farm immediately until the laboratory results were available. On 14 October 2025, highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in all samples.

Anthropozoonotic #spillovers reveal sustained long-term cryptic #circulation of #SARS-CoV-2 within and between #Lithuanian #mink farms

Abstract

Several studies have documented reverse zoonotic transmission of SARS-CoV-2, including in farmed mink which are susceptible to human respiratory viruses and are known for serving as a reservoir capable of generating new virus variants in densely populated farms. Here, we present the results of a genomic investigation launched in response to detected human infections with mink-origin SARS-CoV-2 lineages, and show evidence of at least 14 high-confidence introductions of SARS-CoV-2 from humans into farmed mink in Lithuania where sustained transmission in farmed mink lasted up to a year. We estimated the most likely timeframes for these introductions encompassing at least six SARS-CoV-2 lineages, some of which were already extinct in humans, with Bayesian phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses. This study highlights the public health risks posed by fur farms and underscores that passive genomic surveillance systems are ineffective without the active involvement and expertise of responsible institutions.

#Lithuania - High pathogenicity avian #influenza #H5N1 viruses (#poultry) (Inf. with) - Immediate notification

The State Food and Veterinary Service of the Republic of Lithuania would like to inform you about an outbreak of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) on a laying hens establishment in total 9 aviaries, 246,387 in total. On the same day then suspicion was received, officially appointed veterinarians visited the farm, samples of dead hens were taken monitoring for Avian influenza, and Newcastle disease and sent to the National Institute for Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment (National Reference Laboratory) for avian influenza testing. Temporary restrictions were imposed on the farm immediately, pending laboratory results. Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in all samples and the H5N1 subtype was identified. {Farm is located in Klaipedos Region.}
